Before it was Da Portable Rican, this food trailer was a thriving shaved ice business run by the current owners’ great-grandmother. While shaved ice is no doubt a treat, it didn’t quite capture the family’s culture. Eventually, they decided to use their own recipes to share their heritage with Chicago, IL. Now, you can catch ‘em on the streets slinging a myriad of Puerto Rican fare.
The menu is more or less Puerto Rican dining 101, providing a spread of homestyle fare. Try the flaky been turnover that is the pastelillo, served up with a side of seasoned yellow rice. Feeling like a sandwich? Grab one stuffed with slow-roasted pork served between plantains over bread. We could go on all day singing the praises of this full-flavored fare, but that would take away time you could use to hit the streets and find Da Portable Rican yourself. Or, better idea? Have ‘em out to cater your next event.
