Named after head chef and owner Darnell Reed’s great-grandmother Luella Funches, Luella’s Southern Kitchen is granting Chicago, IL residents a taste of classic Southern hospitality. Luella moved to Chicago back in 1943, bringing her host of Mississippi recipes with her. As a result, Darnell grew up with a deep-seated love of cooking. After 18 years working as a hotel chef, he decided to open his own restaurant. Now, he serves his great-grandma’s recipes to ravenous residents of the Windy City.
The menu is chock-full of soul food classics made to soothe. Start your meal off by sinking your teeth into a buttermilk fried chicken sandwich or a bowl of shrimp etouffee. Toss on a side of house-milled cream cheese grits, simmered black-eyed peas, or a mound of mac ‘n cheese. Then, treat yourself to a slice of chocolate cake with candied pecan topping for dessert. Sound like a perfect meal to you? Good news then. Luella’s Southern Kitchen caters, so book ‘em for your next get-together to treat your guests to this bounty of feel-good fare.
